O ser humano sempre nutriu um fascínio profundo pelas aves. Seja pela liberdade do voo, pelo canto melodioso ou pelo colorido espetacular de suas penas, essa admiração moldou nossa cultura: dos ornamentos ancestrais feitos com plumas aos sonhos de voar, ou, infelizmente, no confinamento de pássaros em gaiolas.
Minha jornada para retratá-las começou em 2020. Enquanto o mundo silenciava no início da pandemia, descobri da minha janela que São Paulo abriga uma biodiversidade muito mais vibrante do que eu supunha. Impossibilitado de continuar fotografando paisagens, passei a registrar as aves que surgiam ali mesmo. Desde então, o aprendizado sobre o comportamento delas tornou-se constante, assim como o aprimoramento das técnicas para fotografá-las.

A paixão acendeu pra valer em 2021. Em Ilhabela, diante de um bando de tucanos-de-bico-verde que visitava o quintal da casa em que me hospedei, vivi um divisor de águas: ali encerrava-se a minha “pré-história” e começava, oficialmente, a minha História na fotografia de natureza.
O logo que você pode ver aqui em cima é, justamente, uma homenagem a esse momento.
Desde então, percorro matas em busca de observar e registrar a beleza e o comportamento desses seres. É um objetivo tão prazeroso quanto desafiador: as aves são inquietas, ariscas e mestres em se camuflar entre sombras e folhagens. Lidar com a frustração faz parte do processo. No entanto, quando a mágica acontece e o clique perfeito surge no visor, a recompensa é imensa.

Encontrou na fotografia de natureza - e especialmente na observação de aves -a forma ideal de integrar sua paixão pela fauna ao seu repertório artístico. Além de unir esses dois mundos, a fotografia tornou-se a desculpa perfeita (ainda que não precise de uma) para deixar o ambiente urbano e se aventurar no lugar onde realmente ama estar: o "mato".

🇬🇧 FEATHERED CREATURES - THROUGH THE LENS OF EGON ZAKUSKA
Humanity has always harbored a profound fascination for birds. Whether drawn by the freedom of flight, their melodic songs, or the spectacular colors of their plumage, this admiration has shaped our culture: from ancestral feather ornaments to our dreams of taking to the skies—or, unfortunately, the confinement of birds in cages.
My journey to portray them began in 2020. As the world fell silent at the start of the pandemic, I discovered from my window that São Paulo hosts a biodiversity far more vibrant than I had ever imagined. Unable to continue photographing landscapes, I began documenting the birds that appeared right there. Since then, learning about their behavior has been a constant pursuit, alongside the continuous refinement of my photographic techniques.
The passion truly ignited in 2021. In Ilhabela, standing before a flock of Green-billed Toucans visiting the backyard of the house where I was staying, I experienced a turning point: that moment marked the end of my "prehistory" and the official beginning of my History in nature photography.
The logo you see above is, in fact, an homage to that very moment.
Since then, I have trekked through forests seeking to observe and record the beauty and behavior of these beings. It is a goal as pleasurable as it is challenging: birds are restless, skittish, and masters of camouflaging themselves among shadows and foliage. Dealing with frustration is part of the process. However, when the magic happens and the perfect shot appears on the viewfinder, the reward is immense.
ABOUT
A native of São Paulo, Egon Zakuska is a designer and illustrator. A lifelong lover of animals and science, he is also an "enthusiastic biologist" by way of a formal education that never quite came to be.
He found in nature photography - specifically birdwatching - the ideal way to integrate his passion for fauna into his artistic repertoire. Beyond uniting these two worlds, photography became the perfect excuse (not that he needs one) to leave the urban environment behind and venture into the place he truly loves to be: the "woods."
